Locally Owned Pet Related Business

July's Featured Business:

MadTown Critter Care

MadTown Critter Care Inc. is a personable, yet professional, in-home pet sitting service serving the greater Madison area. We want to provide your pets with the same loving care that you would. With a life time of experience, we are dedicated and take pride in what we do. Using positive reinforcement, we treat every pet the same as we would treat our own. MadTown Critter Care Inc. answers your pet’s problems while you are away at work, out of town for business, or just enjoying yourself on vacation.

The best alternative to kennels, since you don’t have to take your pet to an unfamiliar environment and pick them up at an inconvenient time. You know your pet will be well taken care of in their own home.  Pets get nervous and very stressed out staying in unfamiliar environments, especially cats. This will also minimize your pet’s exposure to illness. Keep your puppies and kitties at home, for your piece of mind.

We provide services to meet you and your pet’s every needs. From pet sitting and daily walks, to extensive exercise and overnights, we take pride in going above and beyond expectations. Each visit we pick up mail, turn off lights and even open and close curtains to just give your home a more lived in look to discourage mischievous intruders while you are away. We want you to relax knowing your pets and home are being well taken care of.

When starting a pet sitting service, aside from keeping your pet in mind, we wanted to make every pet count. Keeping your pet’s diet and exercise consistent and uninterrupted is very important to us. Also, keeping your loved one in his or her own environment goes along with keeping stress levels down and overall health up. And just having fun doing what we know best and meeting new animals.

June's Featured Business:

Animal Hospital of Verona

The Animal Hospital of Verona has been providing high-quality veterinary medicine and compassionate care to pets (and their people) in the Madison area for over 30 years.  We are the best choice for pet health care for many reasons including:

  • Compassionate Care – We all understand that your pet is a member of your family and treat each patient as if it were our own pet!

  • Convenient Hours – You will find our day, evening, and Saturday appointment hours extremely accommodating.

  • Veterinary Expertise – Our veterinarians are among the best in the business. Dr. Barney Smith is board-certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, Dr. Bill Gengler is a board-certified veterinary dentist, Dr. Leslie Estelle has advanced training in emergency medicine, and Dr. Chris Voss has ultrasound expertise.

  • Certified Technicians – Unlike other hospitals, our technicians (pet nurses) are not simply trained on the job, they have college degrees in animal health.

  • Quality Medicine – We are equipped with ultrasound, in-house laboratory, advanced x-rays, and high-tech surgery monitors. We also only use Sevoflurane®, the safest gas anesthesia available (it’s used for human infants).

  • 24 Hour Nursing Care – We are one of the few hospitals in the area that has overnight support staff to provide care around-the-clock for hospitalized pets.

  • Exotic Species – We treat more than just dogs and cats; we also have expertise in treating birds, rabbits, ferrets and small cage pets.

Our Mission is to provide the best veterinary care and exceptional service to our Patients and the people who love them. Our knowledgeable and friendly staff are happy to answer questions and assist you in caring for your pet. We always welcome new clients. If you don’t yet know us, we would love to meet you and your pets! For more information, contact us at 608-845-6700, or visit us online at www.vetcor.com\verona.

Also, we would like to invite you to join us for the 10th annual Verona Dog Jog, held on Saturday June 13. Not only is this event great fun for you and your dog, it helps support health care for pets belonging to those with significant financial need. Please call us for more information!

May's Featured Business:

Ruffin' It Resort

Ruffin’ It Resort is a premier daycare and hotel exclusively for dogs. The creator envisioned a warm, nurturing haven where every guest (dog) experience is customized to his/her personality and needs. Their promise to ‘treat every guest as we would our own’ is seen throughout the resort, which is modeled after a welcoming mountain lodge; every detail from the spacious villas which include outdoor private patios to the special flooring in the play parks to the tuck-in service (which includes a health check) reflects the love and care.
Ruffin’ It Resort has three group play parks and separates guests based on their size and activity level to create compatible groups. The hotel offers countless ‘pawmenities’, such as canine massage by a certified massage provider, ‘yappy hour’ frosty treats and Doga (yoga for you & your dog). Cageless boarding, called ‘Pooches in Pajamas’ is an all-inclusive overnight slumber party with their own (human) Canine Concierge…they play all day and sleep together at night, curled up next to their caretaker—there’s even movie night!
The most important aspect, however, is the true love and passion each caretaker has for each dog. All caretakers undergo intense behavior and procedures training and are certified in Canine First Aid through the Red Cross. Their number one goal is to make every dog’s dreams come true while at the resort!

April's Featured Business:

bad dog frida

We started bad dog frida as an internet business in 2005 and opened our doors as a store front July 21, 2006. It’s been a great transition to go from a small internet business to having a more visible presence in a neighborhood. We love the opportunity to get to meet dogs and people and connect them to resources. We feel grateful for all the wonderful customers and friends we have made already.

Carmen Alcalde (co-owner) worked for many years in a humane society in Seattle and most recently as the Practice Manager of a local veterinary clinic. She runs the store full time. Co-owner Sue Hunter keeps her day job as a Social Worker for the state and helps with the business on the weekends and vacations. It is truly a labor of love for both of us.

Our store carries healthy treats and foods for dogs (and cats!), and the largest selection of colorful collars and leads in Madison. In addition you can find: organic t shirts, organic treats, eco-friendly beds, many U.S. made toys and artwork and books from local artists and authors.

Why the name? We thought the name would be whimsical and memorable which is what we wanted our business to be.

Our mission is to:

*Honor dogs (and cats) by offering quality products that support canine health and well being and strengthen the human-canine bond.

*Give visibility to artists and their creations.

*Support and promote companion animal rescue organizations.

We give back to the community in a variety of ways. We feature a different rescue group or shelter on our website each quarter and donate money at the end of the quarter. We also hold regular “meet and greets” with various rescue groups, hold educational seminars to help educate about training, nutritional, or health care issues for pets. For fun and dog socialization (not to mention human socialization) we have a monthly “Coffee Hound Hour” on the first Saturday of the month. Join us with your dog for gourmet (and healthy) dog treats, and coffee for the humans.

So far we have given financial support to: Dane County Humane Society, Elmbrook Humane Society, Washburn County Humane Society, Jefferson County Humane Society, GRRoW (Golden Retrieve Rescue of Wisconsin), Green Acres Boxer Rescue, GPA (Greyhounds of America) and other donations for various fundraisers for these and other groups. This quarter our featured group is German Shorthair Pointer Rescue - Wisconsin.

We have just been notified that bad dog frida has been awarded the “Adoption Champion 2007” award from Planet Dog, a major manufacturer of quality dog toys and other fun items. Receiving this award has been one of our proudest moments. To be recognized for the work that our store has done to promote adoptions and to support shelters and rescue groups is more rewarding than we can say!

Please visit us at our store: 2094 Atwood Ave, Madison, WI, 53704, or call us at: 608-442-6868 or shop on our website: baddogfrida.com

Each month we will profile a locally owned pet related business.  Please support local businesses!
